Activity: Column Addition or Subtraction

Pupils use their Enrich school orienteering maps to locate specific control points. At each one, they create two-digit numbers, using the 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th numbers. They then use these in column addition or subtraction sums.

Summary

  1. Pupils use the Enrich school orienteering map to locate their starting point and specific control points.
  2. At each control point, pupils combine the 1st and 2nd , 3rd and 4th numbers from the control marker together to create 2 two-digit numbers.
  3. They then either add these numbers together as a column addition or subtract the smaller number from the larger number as a column subtraction.
