The adult calls out a word. Children take turns to run to a ‘washing line’ on which there is a set of letter cards and try to find the next letter in the word.
They continue until their team has ‘spelt’ the word that the adult called out.
Children sit in a circle. They each have a large word card and one child has a ball.
The adult calls a word and the child with the ball has to pass or roll it to the first letter in the word.
They then pass the ball to the next child in the circle and the children continue to ‘spell’ the word by passing the ball across the circle to each of the letters in order.
One group of children hold up letters. The other group of children have to chase and tag them to capture the letter.
Working with the other children in their group, they use the letters that they have captured to change a set of words, creating new words by changing or adding letters.
